Role of Grassroots Media Critical in Helping Govt.

Commissioner for Lands, Surveys and Urban Development, Hon. (Barr.) Kate Chiwendu Onianwa revealed that the role of Community Newspaper Publishers in the state is critical in helping the government in advancing its policies and programmes to the people.

According to her, government needs support in any form that could aid their stability and sustenance in achieving its legitimate goals.

She stated this when the members of Association of Community Newspaper Publishers (ACNPN), Delta State Council, paid her a courtesy visit in her office in Asaba.

The commissioner further called on the publishers to always  try to hold unbiased judgement in reporting the policies of the government.

The commissioner, who described Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa as an epitome of peace and security, said the governor has demonstrated fear and love of God in his administration and it has led to the peaceful atmosphere the citizens are enjoying in the State today.

Also, she maintained that Governor Okowa has recorded giant strides in the areas of road construction, education, health, agriculture, peace, and security as well as empowerment of the youths, culture, tourism and sports development amongst others.

The commissioner appealed to Deltans to support the administration of Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa to finish strong because his administration has done well, stressing that Deltans will pray for a successor that will continue from where Okowa stopped.

Meanwhile, she promised that under her watch as Commissioner for Lands, Surveys and Urban Development, her ministry will partner with the community newspaper publishers to achieve sustainable goals because there is no way the ministry can work effectively without involving the grassroot media that will convey the policies and activities of the government to the communities in the State.

It was learnt that the commissioner’s humble beginning was manifested when she was born in the fifties to Chief Henry Nkeolisakwu Ajudua and Chief (Mrs.) Regina Obiageli Ajudua.

She had her first school leaving certificate in 1970, General Certificate of Edcuation in 1975, West Africa School Certificate in 1976, NCE in 1983, Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) in 1994, Bachelor at Law (LLB) in 2002 and Barrister at Law (BL) in 2003.

Kate Onianwa began her working career in Nigeria Customs and Excise, Lagos from 1978 – 1981, Regal Memorial School, Lagos (NYSC) 1983 – 1984.

The commissioner, who so much loves politics, came into it in August, 2002 on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). She has held so many positions which include: Secretary to Oshimili North Local Government Council, 2004-2007, PDP Women Leader (Delta North) 2007 – 2009, Coordinator, Uduaghan Ladies Vanguard (Oshimili North) 2010, Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Delta State, January – May, 2011, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, 2020-2021 and currently, Commissioner for Lands , Surveys and Urban Development.

Onianwa, who is a courageous and industrioud leader in the political power play of the state, has transformed herself from local government to a pinnacle of politics and ecomic affluence and has delivered numerous papers on topical issues as it affects Nigeria in general.

Kate Chiwendu Onianwa is an advocate of youths/women empowerment.

Many widows, women and youths have benefitted through her financial empowerment programmes that have enabled them to engage themselves in self-employment in the face of massive unemployment that is threatening the corporate existence of Nigeria as a nation.

The commissioner, who is founder, Female Gender Forum, founder, Winning Women Assembly, a dynamic, charismatic, hardworking, stable legal luminary, and devout Christian, has received so many awards, which includes Niger Delta Commissioner of the Year (2011).
