The Chairman of Ika South Local Government, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior, on Thursday, flagged off the construction of Abude Street in Agbor metropolis.
The commencement of work on the road elicited joy from residents of the street, who described the development as a positive new beginning after years of neglect of the street.
Shortly after the brief ceremony which was witnessed by an enthusiastic crowd including landlords in the area, Engr. Ehiwarior inspected the ongoing work where he was assured of the use of standard materials by the contractor, Chioz Engineering Services Limited.
The contractor also assured the chairman of timely delivery of the project.
Interacting with the press shortly after, the Chairman said he embarked on the project as a means of boosting socio-economic activities in the area.
According to him, “this street, when completed, will provide easy access to other streets, thereby enhancing economic activities in the area and, by extension, Agbor Metropolis as a whole.
“I have been assured by the contractor of the use of high quality materials for the construction of the street, and the creation of three discharge points for the runoff water when it rains. We are aware that streets and roads without culverts wash out easily. This is why we have included culverts on both sides.”
While commending the people of Ika South for their continued support since he assumed office less than two months ago, the chairman said his administration would remain faithful to all campaign promises.
He advised the people to always take charge of government projects in their areas and ensure they were well protected.
“Our people must see themselves as equal stakeholders and partners with government in the efforts to build a better and developed Ika South that we will all be proud of. Nobody should be seen wilfully destroying public infrastructure. We are all co-owners of all projects and infrastructure in our area. We must, therefore, ensure they are well guarded,” he added.
The street, which stretches over a kilometre, terminates at Imudia Street, and is one of the roads in Agbor metropolis that had yet to be tarred.
The contract was awarded by the Engr. Ehiwarior -led administration, and it is expected to be completed within a few months.
