Recently the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party Leader, Kemi Badenoch described the Nigerian Police as criminals, who rob those they should be protect.
Based on this development a Non Profit Government and Human Rights Organization, the Eagle Eyes, has supported the assertion of Kemi Badenoch, by also saying that the Nigerian Police are armed robbers in uniform.
Speaking in a public forum recently, the Organization stated that there was no other way the Nigerian Police could be described better than armed robbers in uniform. Asking what would a government armed authority established purposely for the protections of the people, properties and maintenance of laws and order, which turned their arms on the people using it forcibly and unlawfully to take over their items and belongings? Are they different from the those who are not uniformed people that carry out same evil on the defenseless public?
The Organization promised to carry out a campaign within and outside Nigerian of life threat on the citizens by the Nigerian Police which need total reformation.
The Organization cited instances where policemen rob innocent citizens including foreigners.
According to the Organization, Nigerians can bear witnesses to Lawrence Anini’s robbery saga, where it was discovered that a top police officer, George Iyamu, was a major kingpin.
Nigerians wouldn’t have forgotten so easily a one time Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun, who was dismissed and jailed by the Obasanjo’s administration.
In Delta State , top police officer incharged of anti kidnapping who was involved in a high profile crime was shielded by the then head of the Police Service Commission, who was a retired Inspection General of Police.
Severally, so many innocent Nigerians have been killed under gun by the police for the purpose of disposing them of their moneys and valuables.
Their were other cases where innocent Nigerians were forced by the police under gun point to surrender their belongings.
The organization expressed that non uniformed men involved in such act were condemned to death, nothing stopped policemen involved in such negative acts from facing the same faith.
Presently, the Nigerian Police is nothing to be written about because of the bad image they have given Nigerians and the nation locally and internationally.
Anybody with his or her right senses would support the statement of Kemi Badenoch.
