WEDNESDAY OF THE TWENTY NINTH WEEK OF THE ORDINARY TIME A
Romans 6:12-18
Luke 12:39-48
STAND READY, KEEP ALERT AND WATCHFUL
The unexpected coming of our Lord Jesus is once again brought to our fore. That his coming to us will be likened to that of a thief who gives no notice to their victims is a ready warning to us all to be alert, vigilant and most importantly to be ready to receive him whenever he comes to us.
Jesus means this for all of us. It is a simply way of reminding us that we must keep working, living as his children and disciples, we must keep doing the good we need to do, showing love, living in grace and communion with all. There is no room for laxity, no room or recess in the spiritual life and no break in the life of grace.
Saint Paul in the first reading reminds us of whom we are before God. We have been bought by the precious blood and body of Christ. A price has been paid for our salvation. We have no business with sin and the pleasures of sin. We are supposed to be living under grace and following after the grace of God. Because to live in sin is to submit to the elementary spirits of the world from which we have been redeemed. Saint Paul therefore admonishes us to keep the life of grace active in us by living in righteousness and love.
This is the righteousness that is demanded in our daily seeking and expectation of our Lord. We must live in righteousness, upholding the faith, proclaiming the love of God and always being faithful to our calling as children of God and members of his household. We keep the gaze of expectancy alive since his coming is imminent. His coming may be unexpectedly bringing the end of our lives for our lives are not guaranteed at all. So our lives can come to an end aptly without notice. It could also be in rapture which has no set time, or season as well.
The only thing left for us is to keep expecting him in and out of season. Keep doing all you can to be righteous and faithful, keep living under grace in prayer and consciously doing the best at ones disposal to love, care and serve others.
Heavenly Father, you will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. Keep us alert and faithful to your coming. Watch over our lives and grant us the graces necessary for righteous living, faithful followership and blessed life lived in grace. Bless our lives and bless the works of our hands. May all give honour and glory to your name through Christ Jesus our Lord.
